Summer Flights to Athens: Get the Best Deals & Timing

For anyone weighing up flights to Athens — or onward connections towards the Greek islands — this summer's airport figures are worth a closer look. Europe's airport network built real momentum through the peak holiday season: passenger traffic rose 3.9% in July and 3.1% in August compared with the same months last year, according to ACI Europe.

The midsummer surge carried extra weight because it marked a pickup in pace. In the second quarter of 2026, passenger traffic had grown by just 1.3% amid the impact of the war in the Middle East. Against that backdrop, the July and August readings signaled a market that was accelerating rather than cooling.

The gains were not evenly spread, though. Airports inside the EU+ market grew 3.4% in July and 2.5% in August, while those sitting outside the EU+ grouping posted stronger increases of 6.6% and 6% over the same two months. Broadly speaking, the liveliest activity shifted toward Europe's edges.

ACI Europe's Director General, Olivier Jankovec, read the rebound as evidence that the appetite for air travel remains resilient despite geopolitical tensions, a deteriorating macroeconomic climate, supply constraints and pricier tickets. Holidays and visits to family and friends, he noted, stay a priority for Europeans, and the continent itself keeps drawing travelers from around the world — many of them in pursuit of slower, sun-facing itineraries of the kind we trace in a culinary journey through Greece.

Athens featured prominently in the August data. Athens International Airport (AIA) took third place among ACI Europe's "Mega" airports for passenger traffic growth, with volumes up 3.7% against August 2025. The Mega category, as ACI Europe defines it, covers Europe's bigger hubs — those handling between 25 million and 40 million passengers a year.

Malaga and London Stansted led the ranking, tied on 6.5% growth, while Copenhagen came in just behind Athens at 3.6%. Across the whole Mega group, traffic managed only a 0.8% increase, which underlines how solid Athens' August performance was by comparison.

The ACI Europe figures landed in the same month as a landmark for the Greek capital's main gateway. Athens Airport welcomed 4.03 million passengers in August, the first time in its history that a single month has gone past the 4-million mark. From January through August, traffic reached 23.71 million passengers, up 4.4% year-on-year.

The national picture echoed that strength. Passenger traffic across Greece's airports climbed 3.4% in August compared with the same month of 2025 — comfortably ahead of the 2.5% growth recorded across the EU+ market as a whole. For the many arrivals whose journey continues beyond the arrivals hall, that summer stretch runs from the well-known shores to the hidden beaches in Greece that reward travelers willing to look a little further.

Even so, ACI Europe stressed that headline averages hide considerable differences between national markets. Within the EU+, Slovakia posted by far the strongest August growth at 61%, followed by Slovenia at 19.3%, Estonia at 16.4%, Hungary at 13% and Malta at 12.3%.

Among the continent's largest markets, leisure-driven Italy and Spain delivered the most impressive results, rising 5.2% and 4.7% respectively. UK airport traffic edged up 0.9%, while France fell 1.7% and Germany slipped 0.2%.

Outside the EU+ grouping, several markets grew even faster: North Macedonia by 34.8%, Montenegro by 28.6%, Albania by 20.7% and Israel by 19.5%. Türkiye, the largest market in that group, recorded growth of 4.4%.

At the top of the size scale, airports handling more than 40 million passengers a year saw traffic increase by 1.3% in August. Istanbul Airport was the continent's busiest hub over the summer, with 8.58 million passengers in August alone, followed by London Heathrow with 7.87 million and Paris Charles de Gaulle with 6.86 million.

It was the mid-sized airports, though, that steered the season. Large facilities handling 10–25 million passengers and medium airports with 1–10 million posted the strongest growth of any ACI Europe category, at 4.8% and 5.2% respectively. Small airports — those with fewer than 1 million annual passengers — grew 4.2%, yet their August traffic was still running 25.5% below the level of August 2019, a reminder that full recovery has yet to reach that end of the market.

For all the strength in the topline figures, Jankovec urged a measure of caution. The headline growth, he pointed out, conceals significant differences across markets, and geopolitical developments are increasingly shaping how individual airports perform. Diverging fortunes, in other words, now hinge as much on geography and geopolitics as on demand itself.

Looking ahead, he expects the geopolitical energy shock to put further pressure on both supply and demand. In practical terms, he noted that airlines are already tightening capacity and raising air fares to absorb their rising jet fuel costs — a shift anyone pricing up flights to Athens in the coming months is likely to notice — while renewed cost-of-living pressures in Europe would put the resilience of demand to another test.

For airports, he warned, all of this pointed to a more uncertain outlook, with renewed traffic risks and intensifying competitive pressures stretching into the winter season.
