Athens Airport 2026 Traffic Hits 27.3M Passengers – What It Means

September 2026 kept Athens International Airport's standout year rolling along. Coming off a record August — the first month in the airport's history in which passenger traffic exceeded the 4 million mark — the country's main gateway logged yet another year-on-year rise. Preliminary airport figures show that AIA welcomed 3.6 million passengers during September, an increase of 3.5 percent over September 2025. Once the month was added to the ledger, cumulative traffic for the first nine months of the year reached 27.31 million passengers.

What makes the September result all the more striking is the backdrop against which it was achieved. In an announcement accompanying the data, AIA's management noted that the monthly gain came despite ongoing geopolitical instability in the wider region. It also came despite a two-day closure of one of the airport's runways, which was taken out of service for scheduled upgrade and maintenance works. Facing both of those constraints at once, the airport still managed to lift its passenger numbers on every segment of its operation.

The September breakdown tells a straightforward story. Domestic passenger traffic came to 1.04 million travelers, up 3.1 percent compared with September 2025. International traffic, meanwhile, moved slightly faster, rising 3.6 percent to 2.56 million passengers. Both sides of the business contributed to the month's overall gain, with arrivals from abroad once again making up the larger share of the traffic flowing through Athens.

September's performance capped off a summer in which Athens Airport repeatedly pushed past its own benchmarks. Passenger traffic reached 3.93 million in July, and in August the monthly total crossed the 4 million threshold for the first time, giving AIA its highest monthly passenger volume on record. Put in that context, September's 3.6 million travelers and 3.5 percent year-on-year rise show that demand held firm well beyond the peak month, with the airport continuing to run ahead of its 2025 pace.

The monthly comparison tells the same tale in detail. AIA's figures for January to September 2026, set against the corresponding months of 2025, place September at 3.6 million passengers — up 3.5 percent year on year — with domestic traffic ahead by 3.1 percent and international traffic by 3.6 percent. Taken as a whole, the January-to-September sequence outlines a year of sustained growth, one that crested with the record August.

Across the full nine-month window from January to September 2026, Athens Airport welcomed 27.31 million passengers, representing a 4.3 percent increase over the same stretch of 2025. The strength of that cumulative figure is a reminder that September's gain was no isolated burst: the airport's growth has kept a steady pace right through the year so far. Growth sustained at that level across nine months, even against a backdrop of regional tensions, is what gives these figures their significance.

The segment split underlines how broad-based the increase has been. International passenger traffic totaled 19.53 million travelers for the nine months, up 4.3 percent year on year, while domestic traffic reached 7.78 million, an increase of 4.2 percent. In other words, the airport's international flows and its domestic market have expanded in near lock-step over 2026, each climbing slightly more than 4 percent.

There is one nuance worth flagging in the numbers. The airport's cumulative growth rate has moderated slightly: over January–July 2026 the increase stood at 4.5 percent, marginally above the 4.3 percent now recorded through September. Even so, the overall picture — record-setting volumes, climbing international arrivals and steady domestic demand — speaks to a strong, continuing appetite for travel to and within Greece. For many travelers, that journey continues onward from Athens toward the islands, whether they are chasing hidden beaches in Greece or planning a culinary journey through Greece.

Traffic is not the only measure pointing upward. Aircraft movements at Athens Airport increased as well during the first nine months of 2026, reaching 227,173 flights — 3.6 percent more than over the corresponding period last year.

Within that total, the two markets behaved differently. Domestic flights rose 4.6 percent to 91,040 movements, while international flights increased 2.9 percent to 136,133. Notably, that reverses the pattern seen on the passenger side, where international traffic grew slightly faster: when it comes to sheer flight counts, it was domestic operations that accelerated most in 2026.

For September on its own, the airport logged 28,603 aircraft movements, up 1.7 percent year on year. Domestic operations rose 3 percent to 11,751 movements, while international movements advanced by a slimmer 0.8 percent to 16,852.

In sum, Athens International Airport recorded 227,173 aircraft movements between January and September 2026 — a 3.6 percent rise on the same period of 2025 — with September alone accounting for 28,603 of those flights, split between 11,751 domestic and 16,852 international. The flight tallies mirror the passenger story: an exceptionally busy summer followed by a September that still managed to outpace its predecessor.

One practical caveat before reading too deeply into the September numbers: AIA notes that its statistics for the month are still preliminary and may be revised. The airport only locks in each month's figures after the 20th of the month that follows, so the numbers above could yet be fine-tuned in the final tally. Until that happens, though, the direction is clear — nine months into 2026, both passenger volumes and flight activity at Athens International Airport are running ahead of 2025, with 27.31 million passengers already logged and a record August behind them.
